5 Signs Your Roof Wasn't Installed Correctly Infographic

Your new roof costs a fair buck, so you want it to last as long as possible. Here are five signs that your roof wasn’t properly fitted after the roofers’ truck departed.

1. Leaks

The most obvious indication that a roof wasn’t correctly built are leaks. Check your ceilings and walls for evidence of water damage the first few times it rains on your new roof. Wet areas, black drywall patches, and drips or moisture on any surface are examples of these warning signals.

A changed direction of rain, more rain, or stronger winds might alter how the water interacts with your roof. So, keep an eye out for the installation’s first few rainstorms at the very least. As soon as you notice any indications of water entry, contact your roofing provider.

2. Uneven Appearance

If there are lumps, bumps, or irregular parts, there might be an issue. Low areas on uneven surfaces can become a breeding ground for water. Sitting water has a higher chance of penetrating the surface of the roof. It adds weight, which over time may cause sagging. This can also limit the lifespan of your new roof by causing additional wear and tear on the roofing materials.

Look for regions where the lines made by the shingles are bent or uneven, shingles that appear to be lifted, or wavy sections of the roof. Everything should be level and well-aligned with the surrounding materials.

3. Lacking Elements

Although it may appear to you that your roof is one enormous surface, it consists of several smaller components that all work together to protect your home and extend the lifespan of your roof. Most of these items can be checked visually, but the best course of action is to inquire with your contractor whether they are included and, if not, why not.

Depending on your particular roof design or environment, there might be reasons not to utilize some of these components, but your contractor should be able to satisfactorily explain those reasons.

• The surface that your roof is constructed on is called roof decking. Before the installation of a new roof, it should be examined. Normally, at least a few boards will need to be replaced, but occasionally, the damage may be more severe. The condition of the decking won’t be known to your contractor until the previous roof has been removed.

• Water is deflected away from parts of your roof that require a little additional care using flashing, a thin metal layer. This occurs in valleys formed by intersecting roof planes or around obstacles like chimneys.

• The drip edge is a metal device that hangs over the edge of your roof and directs water runoff away from your roof decking and other surfaces. It is installed at the borders of your roof. This is essential to maintaining the functionality of your roof and most building codes also call for it.

• The underlayment layer of defense for your property is between the decking and the shingles.

• The “V”-shaped component that runs along the upper margins of the roof is known as the ridge cap. Compared to just conventional shingles that have been bent to fit, it gives more protection.

Roof boots are vent pipes from your plumbing system. To help form a watertight seal around the vent pipe, a roof boot fits around it.

4. Lack of Attic Ventilation

In the summer, it can get very hot, while in the winter it can get fairly chilly. The underside of the roof is exposed to these extremes if the space isn’t adequately vented, it might shorten the lifespan of your roofing materials and increase utility expenses as a result. Ask your roofing contractor about the plans for vents before work starts. Verify that such vents are in place after installation.

5. Uneven Shingles

Another potential issue is if the shingles’ color appears off. To cut costs, your contractor might have combined some components or batches. You should get a nice-looking, well-designed roof for the money you pay for one. Take a tour of your home and examine the roof from every angle. The shingles’ size, color, and texture ought to be consistent.

After a roof is installed, making sure these five items are in order will help you maximize your investment and protect your house and finances. You may feel more at ease knowing that you got what you paid for and that your house will probably be safe for many years to come. Working with a professional you can trust will ensure that you receive the results you want and the best value for your money.
