Primer isn’t always necessary before repainting, but the situations where it matters are specific and worth understanding. At its core, primer improves adhesion, evens out surface absorption, and creates a uniform base that makes the finish coat look smoother and last longer. Certain conditions almost always call for it, covering dark or saturated colors, sealing stains, painting glossy surfaces, switching between paint types, and priming raw drywall. Drywall repairs deserve special attention because joint compound absorbs paint differently than the surrounding wall, causing repaired spots to appear duller, a problem called flashing that extra topcoats won’t fix. When a wall is clean, well-bonded, and being repainted in a similar color, primer may not be necessary, and modern premium paints can perform well without it in straightforward situations.
